On Thursday, October 12, 2006 at about 10:00 a.m. personnel from the California Department of Forestry was sent to a reported vegetation fire near Miranda. Upon their arrival they discovered about half an acre had burned and the source of the fire appeared to be a 25-KW diesel generator. Deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded and obtained a search warrant. On the property Deputies found two structures that housed an indoor marijuana growing operation. In total, 731 growing marijuana plants were found ranging in height from ten inches to two feet. A suspect has been identified, although he was not at the scene when the search warrant was served. The case is still under investigation by CDF and the Sheriff’s Office and will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office.

Yesterday’s fire marks the second time in a week that CDF and the Sheriff’s Office have responded to fires started by faulty equipment providing power to marijuana grows.
