The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is searching for two suspects after receiving reports that the two had fired a shotgun at fisherman yesterday. At about noon yesterday a deputy sheriff was driving on Highway 96 when a motorist flagged him down. The driver told the deputy another of his vehicles had been stolen the night before and he had just spotted it on a sand bar near the Big Bar area of the Klamath River. He said there were two men with his vehicle. The man told the deputy he had already alerted a fisherman on the sand bar; the fisherman told the owner he would block the road if the men attempted to leave with the vehicle. The fisherman added he was in possession of a handgun. The owner left the river to get help and had then flagged down the deputy.
The deputy responded to the sand bar; the stolen vehicle and two suspects were gone. The deputy contacted the fisherman who said he had attempted to block the exit of stolen vehicle from the sand bar area with his vehicle. He said the two occupants of the stolen vehicle got out of the car and one of them leveled a weapon at him and fired three to four times. He was not hit. The fisherman, who had a handgun, fired one round at the vehicle as it drove past him, leaving the area. The deputy found three spent twelve-gauge shotgun shells.
Sheriff’s Deputies, personnel from the Yurok Department of Public Safety, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter searched for the suspects but were unable to locate them or the stolen vehicle. The vehicle is white 2005 Toyota Forerunner, California license plate 5MRV309.
