Location: Blue Lake

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man early this morning after he fled from CHP officers earlier in the evening and then attempted to steal a separate vehicle. At about 8:00 PM last night, the California Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on Highway 299 near the Blue Lake scales. The driver, Marty Dupree Hilliard, 31 of Medford, Oregon, pulled over and presented his identification to the officer. Hilliard then fled the scene in his vehicle with the officer in pursuit. Hilliard came to a stop in a driveway on Glendale Avenue, just east of Liscom Hill Road in Blue Lake and then fled the scene on foot. Officers from the California Highway Patrol and sheriff’s deputies searched the area but were unable to locate Hilliard.

At about midnight last night the Sheriff’s Office received a report that a man was attempting to take a vehicle from a residence on Liscom Hill Road. Deputies responded to the residence but were informed by the reporting party that the subject had left on foot. Deputies secured the area and requested assistance from Arcata Police Department’s K9 unit.

The search continued for approximately two hours. Two deputies from the Eureka station responded to the scene with their Night Vision Goggles; all other personnel left the area. About twenty minutes later the two deputies spotted Hilliard who walked within fifteen feet of them. The deputies took Hilliard into custody without incident.

Hilliard was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for attempted vehicle theft and trespassing. Additionally, he was booked for evading a peace officer in connection with the evening’s earlier pursuit involving the California Highway Patrol. Hilliard’s bail has been set at $60,000 and he is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
