At about 1:15 yesterday afternoon 32-year-old Christian Hupp of the Blocksburg area telephoned the Garberville Sheriff's Station and reported that he had just shot his neighbor in self-defense. The neighbor was identified as 34-year-old William Milligan. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered that the victim had been transported to Gerald Phelps Community Hospital by a neighbor.

Deputies contacted Hupp and learned there was an ongoing problem between Hupp and Milligan. The dispute escalated yesterday and the two men had a confrontation in front of Hupp’s residence in Blocksburg. During the argument Hupp fired a handgun at Milligan, hitting him twice.

Deputies arrested Hupp for assault with a firearm and transported him to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Hupp’s bail was set at $50,000 and he is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.

Milligan received initial treatment at Gerald Phelps Community Hospital and then was flown via helicopter to the Bay Area for further treatment.

The case is still under investigation.
