Location: Fern Canyon
Last night just after 7:00, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an overdue hiker in the Fern Canyon area. Deputies from the Special Services Unit responded with members from the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse. While en route they received information that State and National Park Rangers had located the hiker, 48-year-old Joe Mullin. The Rangers reported that Mr. Mullin was suffering from chest pains and was having difficulty breathing. He was approximately a mile and a half from the trailhead and was unable to walk out on his own. Sheriff’s Deputies and Posse members arrived and, with Park Rangers, carried Mr. Mullin out on a Stokes litter. Due to the rugged terrain, it took about two and a half hours to bring Mr. Mullin out to the waiting ambulance crew; he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
