Humboldt County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on the 6000 block of Avalon Drive in Eureka yesterday morning after receiving a report of possible dead animals there. Upon arriving at the residence, Sheriff’s personnel discovered several deceased caged birds and reptiles in the fenced yard. Deputies made entry into the residence to ensure that there were no people in need of assistance. Once it was confirmed that there wasn’t anybody inside the residence, Sheriff’s personnel exited the residence and secured a search warrant. A search of the residence and property revealed a total of 35 deceased animals, reptiles, fish, and amphibians and 84 live animals, reptiles, fish, and amphibians.
Further investigation revealed that the residents had not been seen at the home since December 26, 2007. The residence was without heat or electricity.
The case is still under investigation. Sheriff’s Deputies have determined the identities of the residents, who are believed to still be out of the area. Their names are being withheld until the investigation is complete.
The rescued animals were taken to the Sheriff’s Animal Shelter.
