Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man tonight after receiving a report that he attempted to burn down his house while his girlfriend was inside of it. Just after 7:30 Friday evening, the Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol responded to a residence on the 2400 block of Donna Drive in Eureka. A woman there reported that her boyfriend, Benjamin Ray Wahlund, 30, had doused the interior of their residence with gasoline and had lit a match. Deputies found Wahlund in the backyard of the residence armed with a loaded shotgun. After a brief standoff, Wahlund surrendered to deputies without incident. He was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for making threats with the intent to terrorize, assault with a deadly weapon (other than a firearm), and attempted arson. His bail was set at $50,000 and he is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
