Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Willow Creek man late yesterday afternoon after
receiving a report that a woman had been carjacked. At about 4:30 p.m. deputies responded to the Willow Creek Post Office. A woman reported she had gone inside the post office for a moment. She said she had left the car unlocked with the engine running. Upon returning to her car she found a man inside. The woman told the man to get out of her car and she tried to open the driver’s side door, but the door was locked. The man, later identified as Vincent Rudy Ortiz, 18, drove away with her car, “burning out” and making a u-turn in the middle of County Club Road. Ortiz lost control of the vehicle and crashed the car into a hedge. Ortiz left the vehicle and fled on foot.
Two witnesses saw Ortiz run and they provided Sheriff’s Deputies and CHP Officers with his clothing description and direction of travel. A short time later Ortiz was found hiding in a shed in the backyard of a residence on the 100 block of Walnut Way. Ortiz was arrested. A search of his person revealed he was in possession of an open lock blade style knife, approximately eight inches long.
Ortiz was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility and booked for carjacking, vandalism (greater than $400), and a violation of probation. His bail has been set at $25,000 and he is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.
