A Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy arrested a Redway woman last evening after finding her in possession of approximately 20 pounds of packaged marijuana. At about 6:20 p.m. the deputy was driving southbound through the safety corridor on U.S. Highway 101. He conducted a traffic stop when a vehicle driven by Katherine Stadig, 55, was exceeding the speed limit. Upon contacting Stadig, the deputy smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle Stadig was driving. The deputy walked back to his patrol car to check the status of Stadig’s license. When he returned to her car he noticed that she had rolled down all of the windows in the vehicle but he could still smell the strong odor of marijuana. He looked inside her vehicle and in plain view he saw two large plastic bags containing marijuana. The deputy searched the vehicle and found 17 additional bags containing marijuana (making a total of 19 bags with a combined weight of approximately 20 pounds). Stadig was also carrying a sizable amount of cash. Stadig was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where she was booked for possession of marijuana for sale, transporting marijuana, possession of marijuana (greater than an ounce – a felony), and speeding. Her bail has been set at $20,000 and she is expected to be arraigned by Thursday.
