On Saturday at about 12:45 in the afternoon, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to assist the California Highway Patrol regarding a report of shots fired. Deputies met CHP officers on U.S. Highway 101, just south of the Mendocino/Humboldt County line. At that location, CHP officers were with Robert Anthony Mendez, 23 of Redway, whose car was disabled. Mendez told deputies he had been the victim of a robbery. Deputies learned that Mendez and a friend had met three individuals at Redway Beach (at Beach and Oakridge Roads in lower Redway) to sell marijuana. During that transaction one of the “buyers” went to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun. The suspect pointed the gun at Mendez’s head. A second suspect brandished a semi-automatic rifle and demanded Mendez’s wallet. The suspect also took Mendez’s friend’s wallet. The suspects took the marijuana and left in their vehicle, driven by a third suspect.
As the suspects drove away, Mendez pursued them in his vehicle. On Redwood Drive, near Dean Creek the suspect driver applied her brakes and Mendez struck the rear of the suspect vehicle. Seconds later Mendez saw the front passenger reach out of the passenger side and fire several shots from a handgun. Mendez also reported seeing the suspects throwing items from the car. Mendez continued to follow as the suspect vehicle entered U.S. Highway 101 at Dean Creek. He followed them until his car became disabled.
A short way away, CHP officers and Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies had detained the three suspects after stopping their car. All three were arrested for robbery and transported to the Mendocino County Jail.
The three suspects are:
Nicholas Bradford Brown, 19 of Sherman Oaks, CA.
Rayshaun Antowina Brock, 28 of Inglewood, CA
Amber Capri Wendorf, 20 of Chatsworth, CA
Arrangements will be made to transport the three to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility.
Law enforcement officers were able to find the semi-automatic rifle that had been thrown from the suspects’ vehicle. Additionally, several pounds of marijuana were recovered from the roadside. Two citizens found Mendez’s wallet in the roadway turned it in authorities. No injuries were reported.
