Early yesterday morning, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on the 19000 block of Highway 36 in Carlotta after receiving reports of shots being fired. One caller reported hearing approximately 20 shots fired. When the two responding deputies arrived, they heard approximately 9 shots being fired in rapid succession. They called for additional deputies and while waiting, they heard gunfire another five times. With additional personnel on scene, deputies and CHP Officers stopped traffic on Hwy 36. At about 1:15 a.m., several deputies approached the house and found two adults, a male and a female, standing in the driveway; both were detained without incident. In the yard and along a fence bordering a neighbor’s yard, deputies found numerous shotgun shell casings and casings from a handgun. They located additional casings about ten yards from the highway. Along with shell casings, deputies found identification belonging to Daniel Bertrand Proud, 45. Proud, who lives at the residence, was the male who was already detained. Deputies found a loaded handgun and a shotgun in the truck, next to where Proud and the female had been standing. To ensure nobody was injured inside the residence, deputies contacted those still inside. They found four juveniles and an adult. Deputies arrested Proud for negligently discharging a firearm (a felony) and public intoxication. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where his bail was set at $25,000. The female was released at the scene.
