The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its homicide investigation in the death of Trinidad resident William John Lundy. Late last week Sheriff’s Detectives traveled to Kansas and served several search warrants that had been prepared by agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Sheriff’s Detectives collected evidence from multiple sources, including Mr. Lundy’s vehicle. They also collected evidence from Donny Ray Best, 52 of Athens, TN, the man the Kansas Highway Patrol arrested on September 5, 2009 after finding him driving Mr. Lundy’s car. Evidence the Detectives collected from Donny Best included fingerprints, DNA, clothing, and his cellular telephone records. Detectives recovered three handguns from Mr. Lundy’s vehicle. To date, the Kansas City, Missouri ATF has linked two of the three guns to Mr. Lundy.
The Sheriff’s Detectives returned to Humboldt County and wrote a declaration in support of an arrest warrant for Donny Best for murder. They obtained a $1 million arrest warrant for murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, burglary, and vehicle theft. Donny Best remains in custody in Ellsworth County, Kansas with local charges there pending. Extradition arrangements will be made when his charges in Kansas have been adjudicated.
