Early this morning the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned citizen who reported that marijuana was being moved from a nearby house into a U-Haul trailer. At about 1:15 a.m. deputies arrived at the home on the 1900 block of Sycamore Street in McKinleyville and found the trailer containing ten marijuana plants. They knocked on the door to the home but nobody answered. Concerned that a robbery may be taking place, deputies announced themselves and made entry. Inside the residence they found a large amount of processed marijuana and a significant amount of cash. After confirming nobody was injured or in need of assistance, deputies exited the residence and obtained a search warrant. With the search warrant, deputies entered the house again and seized 60 pounds of processed marijuana and $70,000. As they were processing the scene, a car drove by the house. A deputy recognized the driver as a woman in several photographs inside the house. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and detained the two occupants, Laurel Utman and Randy Chatterton, both 29. Further investigation revealed evidence from the house that connected the two to the marijuana. Deputies arrested both subjects. Chatterton was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for possession of marijuana for sales, possession of marijuana, and possession of a deadly weapon. He posted bail in the amount of $50,000 and was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 8, 2009. Utman was cited for possession of marijuana for sales, and possession of marijuana. She was released at the scene.
