At 6:00 this morning, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a parking lot on the 1600 block of Central Avenue in McKinleyville after receiving reports of gunfire at that location. Responding deputies found a man holding a rifle. As deputies approached, the man, Clarence Clarke, 76 and transient, appeared to level his rifle at the deputies. Using their public address system, the deputies instructed the Clarke to put the rifle down; he complied. The deputies were able to approach Clarke safely and detain him. A witness reported that prior to law enforcement’s arrival, Clarke pointed his rifle at him. Additional witnesses reported that Clarke had fired his rifle once, into the air, while standing in the parking lot. Clarke was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for exhibiting a firearm and the negligent discharge of a firearm. His bail was set at $20,000 and he is expected to be arraigned by Thursday. No injuries were reported.
