Location: Eureka

An Arizona man shot and killed himself this morning after barricading himself inside his mother’s Eureka residence late last night. At about 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a telephone call from detectives from the Glendale Police Department, Arizona. Detectives there reported they were looking for a person of interest in a homicide in Arizona. They believed the man may be at his mother residence on the 1800 block of Mesa Ave. Glendale Detectives also reported the man should be considered armed and dangerous. Shortly before 11:00 p.m., deputies visually confirmed the man was at the residence. Deputies told the man to come outside; he initially agreed but then retreated upstairs. About ten minutes later his mother came out of the house and deputies learned there was an ailing, non-ambulatory man in the downstairs area of the house. The Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiations Team was called out, along the SWAT team and a negotiator from Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services, with medical personnel staged nearby.

Communication was established with the suspect, who refused to come out of the house. At about 2:30 a.m. a rescue team entered the house and was able to safely remove the ailing man from the residence while the suspect remained barricaded upstairs. Negotiators continued to talk with the man throughout the night and into the morning.

At about 9:20 this morning the man took his own life with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Detectives with the Glendale Police Department are scheduled to travel to Humboldt County today to continue their investigation.
