The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement between the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) and the Humboldt County Senior Resource Center. The agreement allows for the distribution of firewood at low cost to moderate-income senior citizens over 55 whose primary source of heat is firewood. The program began in January of 1991 and since then SWAP has given out approximately 6700 cords of firewood to those in need.

The program will run on Saturdays from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm starting on August 23, 2003 through December 20,2003 or until the wood is gone. The wood is available behind the General Hospital Campus at 2200 Harrison Ave., Eureka, at the SWAP wood lot. The third Saturday of each month will be reserved for those living in outlying areas such as Garberville, Orick, and Hoopa. This will keep them from having to compete for time with persons from local cities and will hopefully avoid long lines from forming.

The wood is sold on a voucher system according to income. Vouchers can be purchased at the Senior Resource Center (1910 California St., Eureka), weekday from 1:00 – 4:00 pm starting August 18, 2003 and at the Arcata Community Center (321 Community Park Way, Arcata) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon.

Anyone interested in donating firewood should call the SWAP office at 441-5113 to arrange for the firewood to be picked up.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the following local businesses and municipalities for their support and donations to the Sheriff’s Senior Wood Project: Cal-Trans, County Roads Department, State Parks, County Parks, the Cities of Eureka, Blue Lake, Fortuna, Arcata, and Trinidad, Hooper Trucking, Blue Lake Garbage, Sears & Roebuck, ETI Fields Landing, P.L. Johnson’s Mobile Service, Redwood Community Action Agency and all the citizens who donated wood to this worthwhile program.
