After a brief foot pursuit, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two people late Tuesday night for possession of a controlled substance. As deputies approached the Mahle’s residence, they saw a woman talking on a cellular telephone. They heard her say she was checking to see whether or not “the cops” were nearby. Deputies asked the woman, Deja Autumn Sousa, 32, if Mahle was home. She told deputies he was not. At about the same time, deputies saw Mahle running across the backyard. Deputies ordered him to stop but he continued to flee, jumping over a short fence. A deputy chased him on foot and caught him a short time later. Mahle continued to struggle with the deputy, who was able to place Mahle in handcuffs. When asked, Mahle identified Sousa as his girlfriend. Deputies arrested Sousa obstructing their investigation.
Upon searching Mahle after his arrest, deputies found he was in possession of 2.5 grams of methamphetamine. Sousa was found to be in possession of 0.2 grams of methamphetamine. Both were transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Mahle was booked for possession of a controlled substance, obstructing or resisting a peace officer, and a probation violation.
