Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies are continuing to search for a missing juvenile in Hoopa. At about 1 a.m. yesterday, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a stolen vehicle. Deputies learned the stolen car was traveling southbound on State Route 96, near the vista point, west of Tish Tang. A sheriff’s deputy was traveling northbound and saw the vehicle pass him. The deputy turned his vehicle around just in time to see the stolen vehicle drive onto the shoulder of the highway and then roll over several times. The deputy saw two occupants of the vehicle climb out and flee, jumping over a guardrail, down the embankment toward the river below. Deputies found one young man, a juvenile, holding onto a tree on the steep terrain. Deputies learned there had actually been three people in the car at the time of the roll-over. A second involved juvenile was located walking on the highway several hours later. A third juvenile is still missing but has been identified as Cody Edward Conoboy, 15 of Willow Creek. Deputies and officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Hoopa Valley Tribal Police Department (HVTPD) continued to search the area throughout the night. Yesterday morning the search continued with personnel from the Sheriff’s Office, the CHP, HVTPD, the U.S Forest Service, and the Hoopa Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Searchers were aided by canines and the CHP utilized a helicopter.
The search is continuing today with the CHP flying a fixed-wing aircraft and the Sheriff’s Office has launched a jet-boat.
Cody Conoboy is white male juvenile, 15 years-old. He is 5’7” tall and weighs 130 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He may have been wearing a tan Carhart brand jacket.
It is unknown if Conoboy entered the river or if he fled the area. It’s is also unknown if he sustained injuries in the collision.
