Location: Hydesville

On 08-29-2011, approximately 4:45 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Hydesville resident reporting a man with a knife had entered her home. While enroute to the scene deputies were told the suspect also had a firearm.

When deputies arrived in the area of D street in Hydesville, they located a male on the roadway matching the suspect’s description. The male had a broken fluorescent three-foot long light bulb and screwdriver in his hand, and an empty holster on his hip. They detained the suspect who showed obvious signs of intoxication. Deputies met with the victim who told them she was at home with her son when the suspect came into her residence shouting profanity, with a knife in a sheath on his hip. The suspect threatened to kill her dog and the victim. She told the suspect to leave her home as she dialed 911 and fled from her residence. As she fled her home the male suspect followed her outside her residence and began waving the knife while still shouting. He then drew a handgun from his waist and began waiving the handgun around. The suspect then obtained a fluorescent light bulb and broke it over his head. A neighbor’s husband spoke with the suspect prior to law enforcements arrival and was able to calm the suspect down.

Deputies arrested the suspect who was later identified as Bryan Balcom, 50 years of Hydesville. Deputies also located a semi automatic handgun. He was arrested for brandishing a firearm, terrorist threats, burglary and public intoxication. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where his bail is set at $50,000.00.
