On 11-19-2011, approximately 8:30 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office responded to the 1900 block of Ridgewood Drive, Eureka in regards to a woman screaming for help. When the deputy arrived in the area he was flagged down by a witness. The witness told him he saw a male subject at a nearby residence grab a female by her arm and leg, and drag her down the outside stairs of that residence. The witness heard thumping sounds that sounded like the females head hitting the stairs as this was occurring. The witness ran over to the nearby residence to intervene in the fight. As he did, the female victim came to his residence to seek help and medical attention.
The 49 year old female victim told deputies the male suspect, Richard Garnett, 42 years of Eureka assaulted her while forcibly evicting her from a shared residence. The victim told the deputies Garnett hit her several times in the face with a closed fist until she fell to the ground. She said her head was then bounced down the front porch stairs, then he threw something at her face.
The victim was treated by medical personnel for a swollen left eye, lacerations around her eyes and nose, bridge of her nose and eye lid. She also complained of neck pain.
Garnett was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm. His bail was set at $50,000.00 and he is still in custody.
