On 03-15-2012, approximately 3:00 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office received a 911 call from a homeowner regarding a burglary that just occurred to a shed at his residence located at the end of Eggert Road, Eureka. As deputies were responding to the scene they learned neighbors of the homeowner had armed themselves with firearms and were chasing the suspect.
When deputies arrived on scene they met with the 37 year old male homeowner and his 19 year old daughter. They also contacted neighbors and directed them to cease their pursuit of the suspect with their firearms.
The victims told the deputies the 19 year old female was home alone when she heard their dogs barking in the back yard. When she looked outside to see what was occurring, she saw a male suspect, later identified as Jack Mathew Roy, 44 years old, from Eureka walking around the back yard of the residence trying to figure out how to bypass the barking dog. She then saw the suspect go towards a wooden shed in the back yard where the family was drying medical marijuana. The 19 year old called her father who was out shopping and informed him what was occurring and he immediately drove home. Neighbors were notified and began looking for the suspect; some of which armed themselves. The suspect was last seen leaving the area on a Blue Quad runner into the woods on Green Diamond Property.
During interviews one of the neighbors informed the deputies they believed the quad runner belonged to a nearby residence in the 6100 block of Walnut Drive, Eureka. Deputies responded to the residence and located Jack Mathew Roy at the residence hiding under a bed in the residence.
The victims responded to the scene and Roy was identified by them as the suspect.
Deputies at the scene of burglary located dried marijuana and a lap top computer that was stolen from the backyard shed and had been left in the middle of the yard. The blue quad runner was located nearby in a ditch. The medical marijuana and stolen laptop were returned to the victims. Roy was arrested for burglary and violation of probation and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. He is being held without bail. Roy was on probation for burglary.
