Location: US Forest Service Route 1

On 06-12-2012, approximately 6:00 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office was called on 911 by Linda Terrill, 62 years, from Los Gatos. Linda told the dispatcher she had been hiking alone and became disoriented and lost. She had been hiking since 11:00 a.m. and her car was parked on US Forest Service Route 1, approximately seven miles from State Route Highway 299.The dispatcher was able to obtain the GPS Coordinates from Terrill’s cell phone, despite its weak signal and low battery.

Deputies and search and rescue personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon the deputies arrival they utilized their sirens and horns to locate Terrill at 9:00 p.m. She was in good health and was provided a ride back to her vehicle.

The Sheriffs Office would like to remind hikers to tell family and friends where they are hiking, when they expect to return, bring appropriate equipment and clothing. A cell phone, map or GPS is also very helpful. Keep in mind not all rural areas have cell phone coverage, a cell phone batteries need to be fully charged.
