Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man Saturday evening after he allegedly attempted to extort $5,000 from a businessman. The case began more than a week ago when the owner of Mountain Firewood Enterprises reported that the company’s semi-truck and wood chipper had been stolen from the Weitchpec area. After reporting the theft, the owner received a phone call from Fredrick William Scott, 30, of Hoopa, who claimed that he knew the whereabouts of the stolen truck and wood chipper. Scott told the owner that he (Scott) could help recover the equipment. However, Scott added that “whoever” stole the equipment wanted $5000 for its return.

The owner contacted the FBI in Sacramento and reported the incident. Two Eureka FBI agents began the investigation and notified the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. After continuing the investigation and gathering evidence, Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Scott on Saturday night. Scott was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked on one felony count of extortion and a probation violation.

The California Highway Patrol recovered the stolen property in the Pecwan area.
