The Humboldt County Treasurer acts as banker and portfolio manage for most of the public agencies within Humboldt County. The present portfolio of more than $280 million represents deposits from schools, special districts, and the county. A close review of the investments in these public funds shows that they do not contain any of the "toxic" instruments in the news in recent months.
The portfolio consists mainly of U.S. government-backed agencies, with the balance in medium-term notes of top-rated corporations, the State Treasurer's Investment Pool, and a managed investment pool. Neither the medium-term notes nor the pooled accounts have any investments in Bear Stearns, Washington Mutual, Lehman, AIG, or Merrill Lynch. All of the investments are considered safe in today's financial markets.
The Treasurer's office continues to closely monitor the financial news given the current status in the investment sector.
